Thanks for your excellent post drawing attention to the idea of using home exchange as a way of trying out a country or area you are considering moving to in retirement or where you would like to buy a second home. Although the majority of home exchangers arrange swaps primarily for vacations, there is certainly a growing trend for using a home exchange not only as a great way to save money but also to be near, but independent from relatives or friends, to attend events like weddings or birthday parties and, of course, to check out an area as a potential new home. Note: if you are interested in swapping homes in a particular country, look for home exchange agencies based in that country as these will generally have a better choice of exchange offers than agencies in your own country which will tend to be top heavy with exchange offers from fellow citizens, many of whom will be looking for swaps in the same countries.
