The latest news from one of the worst airlines in the world, United Airlines, is that travelers will be able to check just one bag starting May 5. The cost for each extra bag will be $25. So much for friendly skies! However, tips gathered from the AARP blog shows that senior tourists know how to make space -- and dollars -- count.
My favorite tips are about underwear.
Tip #1 – Ship your dirty laundry home before your last day to save space
Tip # 2 -- Or simply pack oldest underwear and toss the dirty pieces in the garbage.
Tip #3 – Don’t like to pay for expensive nights in a hotel while in Europe? Take a night train, says Jay G, especially if you have already seen the countryside. (Fine, but do you really get a decent night’s sleep sitting up? Or are you booking a sleeper?)
Tip # 4 – “Keep a list of packing instructions in your suitcase to remind you to check off items as you scurry around locating items to pack,” says Dot. Another memory-device: especially overseas, tuck a matchbook or a postcard from your hotel in your pocket or handbag.”If I get to far from my hotel, sometimes they start looking the same and I can't remember the name and address...OR pronounce it properly! Then I just whip out my matchbook, show the address to a taxi driver, and I'm delivered safely right to the front door,” says Steven S.
Tip # 5 – Rather than tying a colored string or handkerchief around your suitcase to identify it easily, spray paint a design on both front and back, says Vicki. Yarn and the like can get yanked off, but spray paint should last forever.
Tip #6 – Carry an empty plastic water bottle with you through the security checkpoint so you can fill it from a water fountain afterward, says Jean B . Why risk feeling parched or waiting for a flight attendant to wander up the aisle?
Tip #7 – If you find it difficult to navigate in the dark, especially when trying to find the bathroom and not wake your spouse, travel with your own night light.
Tip #8 – Never pack your meds in checked luggage.
Tip # 9 – Pack a photocopy of your passport in areas where theft is a problem. If you are not leaving the US, it is perfectly good ID and it saves the hassle of replacing a lost real one.
Tip # 10-- Shower in your underwear!
