Romantic couples of any age can celebrate Valentine's Day with frugal weekend trips that seem like splurges because they don’t involve costly airfare.
The first move is simply to call any two of the most romantic hotels in the city nearest you and ask what special Romance Packages are being offered for Friday through Sunday Feb. 13-15. For those who live near Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Chicago, many luxury hotels that cater to business travelers lower their rates on weekends.
Here are other last-minute Valentine's Weekend deals:
Austin, Texas Region
The Wyndham Austin and Woodward Conference Center features a $219 overnight package for two. It includes champagne and strawberries upon arrival, breakfast for 2 and dinner for 2. You get a deluxe king-sized room whose design is by Michael Graves.
Philadelphia/Allentown Region
The Berks County Wine Trail member wineries offer an all-day Saturday or Sunday self-guided tour of eight of its star wineries with free chocolate and wine pairings. No reservations are required. The event lasts from noon until 5 pm each day. Example: The Long Trout Winery of Auburn has chocolate wines paired with an array of treats: vanilla chocolate brownies with black raspberry wine reduction sauce, “forever Strawberry Fields”vsand tart cookies, and orange chocolate espresso fudge.
New York City
The Hotel Wales on Madison Avenue between 92nd and 93d Streets is steps from Central Park. Couples can reserve a classic queen room at the discounted rate of $219, plus tax when you ask for the Travelzoo special offer. Another choice: the upscale Millennium UN Plaza Hotel spotlights a low nightly rate of $155 plus tax and a free upgrade to a superior room. These must be booked directly through the hotel with a mention of Travelzoo.
Miami Beach Area
At the brand-new chic luxurious South Beach Mondrian Miami, a room or studio can be booked for $360 and up and guests get a complimentary bottle of champagne, strawberries and a rose petal turndown on Valentine's Day.
Nostalgic over the Fontainbleau Hotel? This iconic Miami landmark has been renovated and has a variety of special dinners on Valentine’s Day, including a 4-course dinner at its Vida Restaurant for $48 per person. For those who just want chocolate and Champagne, consider the Bleau Bar’s “Chocolate Indulgence.” Its sumptuous chocolates are presented in the form of cocktails, coffees and sweet, savory delicacies from 3 to 6 pm for $75 per guest, with a half a bottle of Champagne included.
