Tourists can save big on a Eurail Select Pass to visit three neighboring countries within a two-month period. Remember backpacking in hostels? Go again at 1959 prices.

Here’s a great idea for senior and boomer wallets, for grandparents showing the old world to grandchildren, and for the environment. Visit Europe using famous European trains – at a super discounted price.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Eurail, the network of trains in 23 countries, Rail Europe, the biggest distributor of European train passes in North America, has rolled back the price of a Eurail Select Pass to $125 – the 1959 price. That means 70 % off the current price of $442. The promotion is good as long as supplies last and is good for five days of rail travel in 3 bordering countries during a two-month period, according to a Rail Europe press release.

A query to Rail Europe about what is meant by “while supplies last” brought no answer.

The Select Passes allow visitors to take as many trains as often as they want in more than 20 participating countries. Unlike the U.S., where rail travel is a step-child to auto and air travel, trains are typically on time, comfortable, and used often by locals in Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, Holland, the Balkan countries, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Ireland, Romania, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

Many European trains offer excellent restaurant cars. Wi-Fi, and bar cars that make good places to chat with people from around the world. The scenery through places such as the Alps can be sensational.

Rail Europe says the promotion of its limited-time 1959 3-country Eurail Select Pass deal was designed to remind baby boomers and others of the fun times they had when they first roamed through Europe with backpacks and stayed in hostels.

In addition to the convenience of rail travel, the Eurail pass offers additional benefits. Some are free bonuses, while others allow vacationers discounts on private rail lines, on ferries, at certain museums and at select hostels.

Here is an example of the values added. Using the Select pass discounts, Eurail pass holders can get 15 % off the admission to the Oceanarium in Lisbon, a wonderful aquarium, as well as a 20 % discount on visits to the Grévin wax museum in Paris. In Spain, the Select pass gives tourists a half-price admission to railway museums in both Barcelona and Madrid, as well as a reduced fare on ferries between certain stops in the Balearic islands of Majorca and Ibiza,

With the Select Pass, a travelers can use only one free benefit per day, while they can use as many of the reduced-price offers as they can fit into their schedules.
