Perfect adventure for affluent seniors: a "Grand Journey" via chartered Challenger 601 to Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia in 15 days with optional bike tours, walks

Butterfield and Robinson, the Toronto-based luxury tour operator famous for sumptuous luxury trips that include outdoor adventure, may have outdone themselves. They have created a 15-day Indochina “trip of a lifetime” for January 2009 (price: an eye-popping $52,500 per person) that’s already such a hit that it is almost sold out. However, 2010 dates will be announced soon.

Lavish Asian Adventure

Designed “to appeal to those who have never travelled to the region and want to see the highlights,” according to a press release, or to those who have been on B&R Asian adventures and are eager to return, the trip is packed with amazing sights and destinations."Spending more than a few days in a region is so important to understanding the place and getting a feel for the culture," said B&R President Benson Cowan.

Thailand’s Golden Triangle

In Thailand, B&R says the group will learn to “drive” elephants, and visit the cultural center of the Lanna Kingdom, among other highlights. No camping out here – evenings include lodging at the Four Seasons Resort in the Mae Rim Valley.

Your Own Private Laos

Highlights include a private tour of the National Museum, which will be opened exclusively for the B&R travelers, along with guided walks around Luang Prabang, where hundreds of saffron-robed monks emerge from temples at the same time. Destination lodging is Le Residence Phou Vao, which the company says is the best in the country and offers Mekong Delta views from each room balcony.

Vietnam and the Ho Chi Minh trail

Among the adventures here will be a tour of the UNESCO-protected Forbidden City and the imperial tombs of Hue. After a cruise up the Perfume River, guests relax each of two nights at La Residence Hotel & Spa, a colonial-style former governor’s home. In Hoi An, there will be a traditional feast as well as luxurious private villas overlooking China Beach. While in Hoi An, guests have the chance to take bike rides and hikes along the old Ho Chi Minh trail, a network of roads that during the Vietnam war North Vietnamese fighters used to reach South Vietnam.

Angkor Wat and Cambodia

In Cambodia the tour heads for Siem Reap and the justly famous ancient temples such as Angkor Thom, Angkor Wat and Ta Prohm, in the company of local experts. Included in this country are visits to local schools and villages. The final two nights in Cambodia are at the 12-suite Amansara Resort in Siem Reap, originally built as a guesthouse for Prince Sihanouk. New York Times foreign correspondent Jane Perlez has written: “For exotica with luxury in Asia, it is hard to beat.”
